Barkan Winery


 The start  
1889 – 1990
When Shlomo Friedman established the Friedman Winery in front of the Founders' Park in Petach-Tikva, in late 1899, his one goal was to produce sweet Kiddush wine and  brandy for the Jewish settlement in Israel. Shlomo's son, Betzalel, took over from him, and the business grew and flourished. As the demand exceeded the supply, the winery was moved to Kiryat Matalon, in Petach-Tikva's industrial zone, which was then just a desolate sandy area.

The kosher wine is from our vineyard at Avne-Eitan in the Golan with an addition of 15% from The Dishon Vineyard in the Kadesh Valley. The kosher wine has a deep concentrated almost black color. Its aroma is also concentrated: cassis, wild berries, cloves and chocolate. This fine red kosher wine is from the Dovev vineyard on Mt. Godrim on the Israeli Lebanese border. The wine has a deep concentrated purple, black color. Our aim in Cabernet Reserve is to create the harmonious whole, where neither the barrel nor the fruit is overpowering- but rather balanced, complex and supple. The grapes come from our vineyards in the Golan and Northern Galilee. This "signature" South African variety is grown at our Tel Safit vineyard. After crushing, the kosher wine undergoes several days of "cold soak" before fermentation, in order to maximize flavour.
